Researchers in Residence, a scheme which places PhD and Post Doc researchers in secondary schools, is available to you to help enrich your classes. The researchers are passionate, young and from a diverse range of subjects (including all the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities) who are excited about connecting with young people, sharing their enthusiasm and expertise.
The scheme is delivered by a consortium of regional partners, led by the University of Edinburgh, with funding from the Research Councils UK and the Wellcome Trust.
The forming of connections between researchers and school students benefits everyone:
- The school students are given the opportunity to engage with contemporary research and researchers. This can raise motivation, aspirations and stimulate interest in current research.
- The researchers have the opportunity to develop valuable skills like communication and team working.
Researchers in Residence allows your students to connect with research and researchers as people - an excellent way of reinforcing positive role models, breaking down negative stereotypes, raising aspirations and motivating students. The partnership between the teacher and the researcher is vital, as what the researcher in residence actually does in the classroom is worked out through discussion and planning between both parties.
More information about the scheme, including contact details for regional bases can be found on the Researchers in Residence website:
