Specialist Schools and Triple Science 

Engineering colleges:

Existing specialist engineering colleges are expected to offer separate GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics as soon as is practical, ideally from 2009. At the latest, engineering colleges should be offering triple science by the beginning of the school’s next redesignation cycle.

Schools applying for the engineering specialism will be expected to offer Triple Science GCSEs to all students achieving a level 6 or above at the end of key stage 3, both in their own school and for their families of schools. Schools applying for the engineering specialism will need to include in their plans objectives and targets to meet this expectation.

Technology colleges:

Existing specialist technology colleges are expected to offer separate GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics as soon as is practical, ideally from 2009. At the latest, technology colleges should be offering triple science by the beginning of the school’s next redesignation cycle.

Schools applying for the technology specialism will be expected to offer Triple Science GCSEs to all students achieving a level 6 or above at the end of key stage 3, both in their own school and for their families of schools. Mathematics and computing:

Existing specialist maths and computing colleges are expected to offer separate GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics as soon as is practical, ideally from 2010. At the latest, maths and computing colleges should be offering triple science by the beginning of the school’s next redesignation cycle.

Schools applying for the maths and computing specialism will be expected to offer Triple Science GCSEs to all students achieving a level 6 or above at the end of key stage 3, both in their own school and for their families of schools. Schools applying for the mathematics and computing specialism will need to include in their plans objectives and targets to meet this expectation.
